Commission

A commission (1 of 4) for a philanthropist placed within an outdoor courtyard surrounded by her estate. Centered in the courtyard is a 10’ tall Dango by renowned ceramic artist Jun Kanecko. I was honored to have my work permanently displayed along side his. I was commissioned to create four pairs of life-size hands, one sculpture mounted on each wall that would create an energetic cohesiveness to the space while simultaneously connecting the buyer to all five artworks. I wish to stress that my sculptures are created by carving the steel by hand. They are NOT “poured”, meaning they are not created by liquifying metal and pouring them into a mold. These pieces are literally carved, roughly similar to carving wood, using tools and processes that I have invented and are proprietary. This set of hands in particular was a departure from a traditional mudra so that I would better be able to express the nature of this client - her extreme kindness and giving nature. It portrays two hands filled to overflowing, the ability of the hands to hold abundance while unwilling and incapable of retaining all they hold. The refraction of light from my carving process creates a brilliant prismatic quality on the sculpture surface.
