Be Still
Carved steel
Commission
Year:
2021
This sculpture was inspired by Bhuddist mudras. Loosely translated, it can be understood to mean “be still and receive knowledge”. The hands are connected by a stream of looping “water” in the shape of the Enso, meaning “ ultimate enlightenment” and also “no birth, no death”. Additionally, the left hand holds a open lotus flower to signify enlightenment. The hands and lotus are life-size. The sculpture is made by carving steel similarly to carving wood. A certain texture is carved into the steel to refract light which gives this piece a light an gleaming, rainbow colored quality as the viewer sees it from different angles.
